Palimpsest Chair
30.5" x 25" x 25"
High Density Cork, Ash, Oak Dowels, oil finish
The term "palimpsest" harkens back to ancient Egypt, a time when paper was a precious commodity, prompting the reuse of sheets and leaving behind traces of previous writings—a concept reflected in the worn-out chairs of our grandparents' homes and the well-used seats of metro trains. Inspired by this historical notion, I conceived a chair that embodies the palimpsest idea. Its cork seat and backrests are reminiscent of ancient scrolls, ready to absorb and display the unique imprints of each user over time, while the sturdy ash frame ensures longevity and support. This design not only pays homage to the rich history of human interaction with objects but also invites contemplation on the passage of time and the stories embedded within everyday items.
